Two services, two different jobs
Southtree is a mail-in digitization service owned by Imagine Group (IMG) — the same parent company behind Legacybox. You order a kit, pack your physical tapes, ship them off, and 6 to 12 weeks later you get digital files back on a USB drive or via download.
That part works. The problem is what they hand back: one long file per tape. Two hours of VHS becomes one two-hour MP4 with no chapters, no labels, no dates. Christmas 1992, your daughter's recital, and a 40-minute stretch of blue screen all live in the same lump file. So families digitize, celebrate, then never actually open the files again.
TapeSave is the step afterSouthtree. Upload the files, and our AI splits each tape into individual clips, recovers any burned-in camcorder dates, removes the dead space, and labels each scene. The first day of school ends up tagged to 1989 in Google Photos — not buried at minute 47 of "Tape_03.mp4."
When Southtree is the right call
- Your tapes are still physical and you have no working VCR or camcorder
- You want a budget mail-in option (slightly cheaper than Legacybox per tape)
- You're comfortable shipping irreplaceable originals and waiting 2–3 months
- You plan to organize the unsorted output yourself — or pair Southtree with TapeSave
When TapeSave is the right call
- You already have digitized files — from Southtree, Legacybox, Costco, a local shop, or a USB capture card
- You want each birthday, recital, and trip as its own clip with its real date
- You want clips that drop into the correct year in Google Photos, Apple Photos, or iCloud
- You don't want to scrub through 4-hour files looking for one memory
- You need results in minutes, not months
The hard part is digitizing. The useful part is organizing.

Can I use TapeSave on files from Southtree?
Yes. Southtree delivers MP4 files (download or USB). TapeSave accepts MP4, MOV, AVI, and MKV — upload them and you'll have organized clips in minutes.
Is Southtree the same company as Legacybox?
Both are owned by IMG (Imagine Group). The brands are positioned differently — Southtree leans value, Legacybox leans premium — but the pipeline and one-file-per-tape output are essentially the same.
How long does Southtree take?
Southtree quotes 4–10 weeks once they receive your tapes, plus shipping each way. Total round-trip is typically 6–12 weeks. TapeSave processes a digitized file in minutes.
