The deck matters more than the format name
Hi8 cassettes are physically identical to Video8 cassettes — the only difference is the recording format. A Hi8 tape played in a Video8-only deck will play, but you'll get Video8-resolution output (around 240 lines instead of Hi8's ~400 lines). Most consumers wouldn't notice immediately, but the difference is real on a TV.

What's the difference between Hi8 and Video8?
Hi8 (introduced 1989) records at higher resolution than standard Video8 (1985) using the same physical cassette. Hi8 needs a Hi8-capable camcorder or deck for full-quality playback — playing a Hi8 tape in a standard Video8 deck gives you Video8-resolution output.
