Why Digitized Home Movie Files Are So Big

The thumb drive arrives, you open it, and one tape is a 6 GB file. You have nineteen more tapes. Suddenly a project about memories has turned into a question about hard drives. The good news is that video file size is not mysterious: it comes from one piece of arithmetic, and once you can do it in your head you can plan the whole collection in about two minutes.

The 30-second answer

A video file's size is its bitrate multiplied by its running time — nothing else. A digitized 2-hour tape normally lands somewhere between 2 GB and 8 GB, and the difference between those two numbers is the transfer setting, not the tape. A shelf of twenty tapes therefore needs roughly 40-160 GB, which fits on any 1 TB external drive twice over.

The only formula you need

Every video file is a stream of data flowing at a fixed rate. That rate is the bitrate, measured in megabits per second (Mbps). Size is simply the rate times the running time:

Bitrate (Mbps) ÷ 8 = megabytes per second.
Multiply by 3,600 for one hour. So 1 Mbps ≈ 450 MB per hour, and every other number is a multiple of that.

That single line answers most questions people ask about their transfers. An 8 Mbps file runs 8 × 450 MB, or about 3.6 GB, per hour — so a 2-hour tape is roughly 7 GB. A 3 Mbps file runs about 1.35 GB per hour, so the same tape is under 3 GB. Same footage, same length, same picture; different dial setting at the capture card.

Note what is not in the formula: the age of the tape, how faded it looks, whether it is VHS or Hi8, or how many separate events are recorded on it. None of those change the file size.

What a 2-hour tape typically weighs

Transfer services and capture devices cluster around a few familiar settings. These are the ranges you will actually see on a thumb drive, worked out with the formula above:

  • DVD-style MPEG-2 (.vob, .mpg): around 4-6 Mbps, so roughly 1.8-2.7 GB per hour. This is why a standard 4.7 GB DVD holds about two hours and not more — the disc size set the bitrate, not the other way round.
  • Standard MP4 (H.264), the common default: 2-4 Mbps, roughly 0.9-1.8 GB per hour. A 2-hour tape lands near 2-3.5 GB.
  • "High quality" or upscaled MP4: 6-10 Mbps, roughly 2.7-4.5 GB per hour — a 2-hour tape of 5.5-9 GB.
  • Lightly compressed or lossless capture: what a hobbyist gets from a capture card set to preserve everything. These run to tens of gigabytes per hour and are meant as working masters, not as the copy you keep on your laptop.

Why bigger did not mean better

The uncomfortable part: past a fairly low ceiling, a bigger file of a home movie is not a better home movie. VHS holds on the order of 240 lines of horizontal detail. Hi8 and S-VHS do better, MiniDV better still, but none of them approach even basic HD. A transfer saved at 10 Mbps and upscaled to 1920×1080 is a large, faithful recording of standard-definition footage. The extra gigabytes bought fidelity to the blur, not a sharper picture.

Two practical consequences. First, if a service offers an "HD" tier for tape transfer, understand what it is selling: a cleaner capture and a bigger file, not detail that was never recorded. Second, if your files came back enormous and your drive is groaning, you have not lost anything precious by keeping them exactly as they are and buying a bigger drive — which is cheaper than any decision that risks the originals.

How to check what you actually have

Thirty seconds with any one file tells you the bitrate, resolution, and length — enough to predict the whole collection.

  • Windows: right-click the file, choose Properties, open the Details tab. Total bitrate, frame width and height, and length are all listed.
  • Mac:select the file and press Command-I for size and duration; for the bitrate, open it in QuickTime Player and choose Window → Show Movie Inspector.
  • Either, and more detail:open the file in the free VLC player and choose Tools → Codec Information (Window → Media Information on a Mac). This also shows the codec, which matters if a file refuses to play at all.

Sanity-check what you find against the formula. A 2-hour file listed at 4 Mbps should be roughly 3.6 GB. If it is wildly smaller, the transfer was compressed harder than advertised — worth knowing before you throw out the tapes.

Sizing the whole shelf

Take one finished file, note its size, and multiply by the number of tapes. Then double it, because a single copy of an irreplaceable archive is not a backup. A worked example for a typical family box:

  • 20 tapes, mostly 2 hours each, transferred to standard MP4 at around 3 GB per tape → about 60 GB.
  • The same 20 tapes at an "HD" 8 GB per tape → about 160 GB.
  • Either figure, kept twice (one working copy, one backup) → 120-320 GB. A 1 TB drive holds that with room to spare; a 2 TB drive holds it and the next box you find in the attic.

Three size traps that stop people cold

Almost every "it won't work and I don't know why" email about digitized tapes is one of these three.

  • The 4 GB wall on USB sticks. A stick formatted FAT32 cannot store any single file of 4 GB or more, however much free space it reports. A 2-hour transfer often sails straight past that. Reformatting the stick as exFAT fixes it permanently — and erases the stick, so move anything valuable off first. Copy the masters, not the only copy.
  • Free cloud tiers are smaller than your box. A free Google account has 15 GB shared across Gmail, Drive, and Photos; a free iCloud account has 5 GB. Five digitized tapes can exhaust either. Plan on a paid tier for the cloud copy, or keep masters on your own drive and put only the shareable clips online — the Google Photos walkthrough covers what counts against the quota.
  • Email will never send these. Common mail services cap attachments around 25 MB — a rounding error against a 3 GB file. Sharing a home movie always means sending a link or a short clip, never the file itself.

Should you shrink them?

The instinct is to run everything through a compressor and reclaim the space. Resist it for the master copies. Every re-encode discards detail permanently, and unlike the tape, the file gives no warning that it happened — you notice years later, on the one clip that mattered. Storage is the cheapest component of this entire project; the footage is the one part that cannot be re-bought.

What actually solves the problem is not compression but splitting. Nobody watches a 3 GB file of a whole tape — they watch the four minutes of the 1994 birthday. Frequently Asked Questions

How big is a digitized 2-hour VHS tape?

Usually between about 2 GB and 8 GB. The range is that wide because size depends on the bitrate your service saved at, not on the tape. DVD-quality MPEG-2 lands near 2-3 GB for two hours; a standard MP4 near 2-3 GB; an 'HD' or lightly compressed transfer can reach 7-8 GB for the same two hours of identical footage.

Does a bigger file mean better picture quality?

Not from a tape. VHS holds roughly 240 lines of horizontal detail, and no transfer setting adds detail that was never on the tape. A larger file preserves more of what the tape had, but past a point you are only storing a more faithful copy of the same blur. An upscaled 1080p transfer of a VHS tape is a big file of standard-definition footage.

How much storage do I need for 20 tapes?

Take the size of one finished file and multiply. Twenty 2-hour tapes at 3 GB each is 60 GB; at 8 GB each it is 160 GB. Either number fits comfortably on a 1 TB external drive with room for a second copy of everything, which is what you actually want.

Why won't my 5 GB video copy onto a USB stick that has space free?

The stick is almost certainly formatted FAT32, which cannot hold any single file of 4 GB or larger no matter how much free space it shows. Reformat the stick as exFAT (this erases it, so copy anything off first) and the same file copies fine.

Should I compress my home movies to save space?

Not the master copies. Re-encoding a video throws away detail permanently, and storage is the cheapest part of this project. Keep the originals as they came back, and make smaller copies only for the specific job of sharing or texting.

Do these files count against free Google Photos or iCloud storage?
